🔆 Nuwara Eliya: an English dream among the Ceylon hills Imagine a city where foggy mornings, neat lawns and Victorian mansions make you forget you're in South Asia. Nuwara Eliya, located at an altitude of about 1884 meters above sea level, is the highest city in Sri Lanka. Its name translates as "city of light" or "city on the plateau", but in guidebooks it is known as "Little England". 🔆England in the tropics: history and climate The city was founded in 1846 by the British who escaped the tropical heat here. They developed it in their own way: they laid out parks, built golf and cricket fields, and erected mansions in the colonial style. Much of that heritage still operates today - the red brick post office building, grand hotels and clubs with centuries-old traditions. The climate here is not tropical at all: during the day it is from 15 to 20 degrees, and at night the temperature drops to 5–10 degrees. In the mornings, fog descends cinematically from the hills, creating a scenery that truly resembles the English countryside. 🔆 The main pearls of the city · Lake Gregory: an artificial reservoir with a landscaped shoreline - an ideal place for walks and picnics. · Victoria Park: a well-kept park in the heart of the city, founded in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. On its territory there is a museum with a collection of old colonial photographs. · Hakgala Botanical Garden: established back in 1860, it is famous for its collections of roses and ferns. And nearby is the Sita Amman Temple, a significant Hindu temple associated with the epic Ramayana. · Hippodrome: Horse racing is still held here today, a tradition dating back to colonial times. 🔆 Tea capital of the world Nuwara Eliya is called the tea capital of the country. The plantations are located at altitudes from 1400 to 2400 meters. It was here that Scottish planter James Taylor first began growing tea commercially in 1867. Today, many factories welcome guests: you can see the process of collection, drying and tasting. 🔆 Outside the city: the edge of the world under UNESCO protection The main treasure outside of Nuwara Eliya is Horton Plains National Park. In 2010 it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The main attraction of the park is the World's End cliff, which offers breathtaking views of the valleys below. The route is about 9 kilometers long and passes through unique mountain ecosystems. 🔆 Summary Nuwara Eliya is a place where you can put on a sweater in the middle of a tropical country, drink five o'clock tea in an old hotel and forget that outside the window is not Foggy Albion, but Sri Lanka. Come here for coolness, the aroma of Ceylon tea and the atmosphere where time stood still somewhere in the 19th century.
