🔆 Hikkaduwa: wave energy and resort drive If Ahungalla is the solitary whisper, Bentota is the smooth rhythm of the river, then Hikkaduwa is the loud, pulsating beat of the ocean. The most famous and popular resort on the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka. They don’t look for silence here - people come here for energy, movement and vivid impressions. 🔆 Beach: space, waves and golden sand Hikkaduwa beach stretches for almost 4 kilometers - wide, open to the ocean. The sand here is light, dense, pleasant for walking. But its main feature is the waves. Due to the proximity of reefs and ocean currents, the water is rarely calm. This is an ideal place for bodysurfing and wave riding, but for simple swimming, be careful - there are areas with strong rip currents. Visibility under water really leaves much to be desired: the sand is stirred up by the surf, and there is no talk of transparency, as in Mirissa or the Maldives. 🔆 Corals - existed, but were not resurrected Hikkaduwa used to be famous for its coral gardens right off the coast. Unfortunately, mass bleaching and human activity have greatly altered the reef. The remains of corals can be seen in the calm, but full-fledged snorkeling here will disappoint - it is better to go to Unawatuna or south to Tangalle for this. In Hikkaduwa, diving centers offer trips to the outer reefs, but visibility there is average and seasonal. 🔆 Atmosphere: 24-hour holiday Hikkaduwa is a party place. Along the beach and the main street there are dozens of guesthouses, bars, restaurants with live music, souvenir shops and surf rental shops. In the evenings there is a lot of excitement here: DJs, fire shows, open-air cocktails. This is not a place for meditation, but a resort for those who love communication, movement and do not want to be bored until midnight. 🔆 What's interesting in the area · Lighthouse on a rocky cape - north of the beach. It offers a panoramic view of the entire coast - especially beautiful at sunset. It can be reached on foot or by tuk-tuk. · Naringala village - next to the lighthouse, famous for its small turtle farm. Here you can really see kids, but without excessive pretentiousness. · Madu Ganga River (half an hour's drive) - classic mangrove lagoons with boat rides, monitor lizards and kingfishers. This is a completely different world, quiet and green. · Galle is just 20 minutes away by auto-rickshaw. The Dutch-era fortress, narrow streets, boutiques and old-European atmosphere in the tropics are a must-see. 🔆 Summary Hikkaduwa is not about postcard pictures and transparent surfaces. It's about the wind in your hair, the sound of the surf, the taste of spicy curry and laughing until the morning. She is honest in her hustle and bustle and attracts those looking for an active beach holiday with vibrant socialization. If you want a calm paradise with clean water, choose further south. If you have a drive and a party, Hikkaduwa is waiting.
